Another Day In Cabo

#Cabo. Another day in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. That is exactly how I felt during this trip. Don't get me wrong, it was exciting to go, and get away from the cooler winter weather we were experiencing in the San Francisco Bay Area. However, this particular trip did not feel the same as the other four times we were in Cabo.

Upon arrival at the San Jose del Cabo Airport, it was no surprise that we would be met with taxi requests or time share offers as we tried to exit. This prompted us to say "No, Gracias" at least 10 times in order to escape outside. Hugo, the concierge from the condo, had arranged for transportation to our accommodation. Javier was our driver. After calling Hugo to let him know we were outside the airport, he let us know where to meet Javier. It took some time to figure out who Javier was, but we finally found him, and departed the airport for our 45 minute drive to the Cabo marina.

Javier offered to stop at Walmart so that we could buy groceries, but we just wanted to get to the condo and get settled. However, we did not feel that Javier wanted to take us to directly to the condo. He received a phone call, and we were able to make out that the other person on the line was trying to have Javier convince us to go to Walmart. Then we got a call from Hugo on our cell phones, and about 10 text messages still trying to convince us to stop at Walmart. WTF?? I insisted that with traffic we would not be arriving early to the condo, if that was the fear; rather, we would be arriving right around check-in time. Both Javier and Hugo gave up and took us to the condo, where the cleaning staff had just finished.

It was just a few minutes past 3:00 pm when we arrived and, thankfully, the condo was ready. It was a warm afternoon and there was freshly-made guacamole, homemade tortilla chips, and chilled water and Modelo beer awaiting us. As we walked through the front door, our eyes were treated to a beautiful balcony and view of the marina. This always pleases us when we get a vacation rental that is exactly as pictured on the internet.

Hugo gave us an overview of the unit, how to get connected to wifi, where there was printed information on nearby surroundings and restaurants, then went on his way. We quickly got settled by unpacking our suitcases and then diving into the guacamole.

Shortly after we relaxed in the condo, we made our way to dinner. We walked about 10 minutes to a local establishment that had over a thousand Yelp reviews called Tacos Gardenias.

Gardenia's had fruit margarita's to help quench our thirst and cool us on this warm day. The beef and fish tacos helped satisfy our appetite after a long day of traveling. Afterwards, we took a taxi to Walmart and with our already prepared shopping list in hand, picked up items to last us throughout the vacation stay.

We try our best to blend in with the locals in Mexico, but that does not always work. In Walmart, with shopping bags and grocery list in hand, we walked inside like any other local store where we have shopped dozens of time. We knew exactly where our treasured items were shelved and made out way their. Clear on the other side of the store in the produce area, we were hunting for mango, bananas and berries. As soon as I turned my back, a man approached Derick and began to chat him up casually. I looked over and thought something is not right with this scene, then moved closer to Derick. At some point in the conversation, the man speaking with Derick started to invite him to church but his real goal was to solicit timeshares. I said no thank you, we have to get moving. After the man got the message, we laughed about it and continued shopping. Then after 30 more minutes, we were on our way back to the condo to settle in for the dramatic evening sunset.

The condo owner did say there was a bar below us that gets lively and noisy at night. He wasn't kidding and provided a container full of soft ear plus. We were tired this first day and went to bed shortly before 11pm, but the party, it seemed, was just getting started. The sounds of Bruno Mars, the Black Eyed Peas, Jay-Z and PitBull wailed up through the box strings, into the coils of the mattress, and into our ear-plugged ears each night. The next day while walking around the marina, we saw the Nowhere Bar Staff setting up for that evening's clubbing. I asked one staff member, "What time does your bar close at night? He replied, 1:00am." I mentioned that I can hear them jamming each night, as our condo is right above them. He said I should come down and join the fun. Uh, I was hoping they would soften the music after 11pm.

If you are going to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, some great marina dining recommendations are Los Deseos, WTF Burger Bar, and about a 5-10 minute walk from the marina is il Forno. For breakfast, Mama's in downtown Cabo is worth the 10 minute walk in the opposite direction from the marina.
